What are UV rays? and Why do I have to protect myself from them? UV Rays damage the skin, age it prematurely, and increases the chance of developing skin cancer. The two main ultra violet rays that you should be most concern about are UVA and UVB. UVA (Ultra Violet A Ray) which is a long wave which is most damaging to the underline skin cells. This is what causes the premature aging process. UVB which means ULTRA VIOLET B RAY is a short wave that causes sunburn. This Ray is not as potent as UVA but it is the central cause of sun burning and tanning. Sun damage is one of the largest contributors to aging skin. Both UVA and UVB can cause skin cancer.
